Standard is a level of quality that people expect and generally accept as normal. Elevator standards are a set of rules and norms to be observed right from the design stage, manufacturing, installation and maintenance. Almost every country has evolved its own standards to suit their local conditions. In India we have the standard formulated by the Bureau of Indian standards, BIS, and its relevant number for Lifts is BIS 14695. This standard periodically gets updated by a technical committee comprising of experts in the industry derived from general public, manufacturing companies, town planners, government agencies etc.
By and large, there standards are similar worldwide except for few variations to suit the respective countries.
Standards give brief description of functioning of mechanical / electrical / electronic components and assemblies. Safety aspects are given high emphasis.
The main idea of standards is to have a uniform code for lifts all over the country. Many of the states in the country have their own set of rules and codes. By and large these state level rules and codes prescribe norms and procedure for obtaining permission to install a lift and thereafter obtain the license for operating the lifts. There are moves in the states to follow the Indian codes and for the Indian code to align with international codes.
By referring to the standards the architect / builder can obtain most of the required details on the dimensions & sizes based on the types of lifts planned their capacity, speed etc. Sometimes one may not be able to follow the guidelines due to other space constraints. Drawings are finalized after mutual discussions and agreements between the supplier and purchaser. Additional care is taken not to dilute the safety aspects of the code.
